肺炎链球菌病已成为全球一个重要的公共卫生问题。全球范围内，肺炎链球菌始终是导致婴幼儿严重疾病的首要因素，也是引起肺炎、菌血症、鼻窦炎和急性中耳炎的最常见病因。2005年世界卫生组织(、ⅣHO)估计全球每年有160万人死于肺炎链球菌病，包括70万一100万5岁以下儿童，其中多数生活在发展中国家“1。
