Abstract:
English Abstract:
An epidemic diarrhea in Guangxi, Guangdong and Hunan provinces during 1969-1973 wasstudiedi. The overall incidence rate of the disease in the epidemic areas was about 20%. The rates fluctuated from 2.1% to 93.6% in the various places. The epidemic season occurred between April and June, for about 50 days. There were no differences in the distribution of the disease in populations and geography. The predominance of occurrence of the disease in children was not observed. The source of infection was infected patients, and the mode of transmission was fecal-oral. The main clinical symptom were bad headache (51.5%), fatigue and exhaustion (87.2%), malaise (49,6%). anorexia (87.5%), acute diarrhea (100.0%), nausea (32.7%), vomiting (10.8%), abdominal distension, paia and borborygmus (69.0-75.3%), much wind (45.7%), tenesmus (17.6%), fever (19.7%) and symptoms of slight upper respiratory tract infection (10.0%), The average incubation period was 52 hours (range 34-97 hours). Neither deaths nor chronic disease were investigated. The routine treatment used for diarrhea was not effective for the disease. The pathogen was not isolated, although more than 100 fecal specimen-of patients were tested by conventional bacterium culture and tissue-culture techniques. On the basis of epidemiological and clinical characteristics, the disease was diagnosed as an epidemic diarrhea.
